In the far west of Japan, there’s a bridge that looks photoshopped. It isn’t. Tsunoshima Bridge, Yamaguchi Prefecture. 1,780 meters of road, laid low and gentle across water so turquoise it gets mistaken for the Caribbean — except the green hills behind it are unmistakably Japan. It connects a small fishing island to the mainland. The road bends in a soft arc partway across — the route curves around a tiny islet instead of bulldozing through it. The toll: zero yen. One of the longest free ocean crossings in the country. No booth, no ticket, no fee. Locals use it to haul fish and get to school. Travelers drive hours just to see the road melt into that color. It opened in 2000, built not for tourists but so islanders wouldn’t be cut off when ferries stopped in storms. The beauty was a side effect of taking care of 700 people. That’s very Japan: build it for the fishermen, and accidentally create one of the most beautiful drives on Earth. 🇯🇵
