Videos show three suspects in shooting death of Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez
Carlos Ramirez was 10 days from graduating the academy. Three men in black still have a head start on a dead recruit.
Summary
- Fox reports Pima County is hunting three men after a Wednesday shooting killed Tucson police recruit Carlos Ramirez, 23, and wounded his 23-year-old fiancée, a county corrections officer.
- Ramirez was due to graduate Basic Recruit Class 26-1 on Aug. 27 and had already worked as a sheriff's corrections officer. The couple shared a child.
- An arrest warrant names Alex James Barnett, 33. The other two men are unidentified. A gray Acura MDX was abandoned near South Palo Verde and East 33rd and recovered Thursday.
- Sheriff Chris Nanos said the suspects wore black and ski masks around 6 a.m. at Ramirez's home in the 7700 block of South Enchanted Spring Drive, about 17 miles southwest of Tucson.
Commentary
A recruit's mother still keeps a pressed uniform on a vinyl hanger for an Aug. 27 ceremony that will now be a casket. She does not need a seminar on 'root causes.' She needs three names and a courtroom that does not blink.
That is the gap. Soft-on-crime cities treat a badge as a costume. Ramirez treated it as a job he had not even started. Ten days from graduation is not a statistic. It is a stolen oath.
Look every academy class in this country in the eye: if a man can be shot in his own driveway before the badge is pinned, what did the last decade of catch-and-release buy the next recruit?
Comments
Name the three. Keep the warrant loud. Do not let the Acura become a cold case.
He already wore a corrections belt. That is a brother. Hunt like it.
Home invasion plus a dead recruit is capital territory. Do not plea it into a calendar.
A serious city treats an academy murder as an attack on the state, not a neighborhood beef.
Ski masks at 6 a.m. are not a misunderstanding. They are a plan.
I drive home in the dark. He died in his driveway. That is the whole country in one street.
A shared child is now a file. The ceremony date is now a funeral date.
If the shooters walked because some prior case leaked, publish that prior.
Fox printed Ramirez, Aug. 27, Barnett, and the Acura. Keep those nouns on the air.
Catch the three. Pin the class. Do not let the next recruit inherit a weaker street.
