Trump Admin Sues School District For Clandestine Student Gender Transitions
Since 2017 the school kept the secret. FERPA still names the parent.
Summary
- The Daily Caller reports the Trump administration is suing Unified School District No. 500 in Kansas City, Kansas, over policies that hide a student's social transition from parents, alleging violations of FERPA.
- The district's 2017 policy presses staff to use a student's preferred name and pronouns and, if the student does not want parents involved, to handle the change case by case without them.
- The complaint also cites the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment, which limits schools from pulling sensitive personal information without parental rights. An August 2025 Education Department probe already covered Topeka, Shawnee, Olathe, and Kansas City after a Defense of Freedom Institute complaint.
- Assistant AG Harmeet Dhillon said parents know their children better than the district. U.S. Attorney Ryan A. Kriegshauser said hiding records from parents breaks the partnership public schools require. ED had already threatened federal funding at the four Kansas districts.
Commentary
A warehouse mom still sits on a vinyl chair in a school office and signs a form her taxes already paid so she would see the file. She did not pack a lunch so a 2017 memo could rename her kid behind the office glass.
Preferred name. Case by case. Parents out. The honest dad already paid the record. The secret paid the hallway.
Look every working mother who still checks a backpack at the kitchen table in the eye and answer this: if FERPA still names the parent, who still owns the file?
Comments
2017 policy. Parents optional. That is not counseling. That is a wall.
I signed a permission slip for a field trip. A name change is not smaller than a zoo visit.
FERPA. PPRA. Aug. 2025 probe. Funding threat. Publish the four.
Allied schools still mail the record home. A secret name is a breach.
USD 500. Dhillon. Kriegshauser. Defense of Freedom Institute. File the complaint.
I still eat from a lunchbox under a break-room clock. I want the file on my kitchen table.
A school that hides a name from a mother is not a partner. It is a rival.
A district that can hide a file can hide a lot more. Start with the parent.
Daily Caller printed 2017, FERPA, four districts, and the funding threat. Argue those nouns.
Open the file. End the secret. A parent is not an obstacle.
