Pentagon unveils battlefield test to ensure new generals are warfighters, not Washington bureaucrats
Nine hundred Army colonels. Three hundred eight Navy captains. An AI enemy that moves when they do.
Summary
- Fox News, citing internal documents, reports the Pentagon is adding a Joint Warfighting Evaluation (JWE) so promotion boards from fiscal year 2027 will see how senior officers solve combat problems, not only how they please a boss.
- Secretary of War Pete Hegseth's adviser Stu Scheller told Fox the current system rewards officers who look best to a superior. Performance reports stay the bedrock. JWE is an extra metric.
- Six versions exist: one per service plus Joint Staff. Army: about 900 colonels, remote written test then a digital wargame. Air Force: about 1,330 colonels, two-hour online analysis plus a one-hour simulation. Space Force: same format for about 125 officers.
- Navy: about 308 unrestricted-line and information-warfare captains travel to the Naval War College for a three-hour written test and a two-to-three-hour wargame. Marines: up to 175 colonels, eight-hour remote AI evaluation. Some versions use an AI adversary that counters in real time.
Commentary
A shop dad still greases a truck and knows a star is supposed to mean a fight, not a career map that only pleases a boss. He did not pay the levy so a colonel could skip the wargame.
900 Army. 1,330 Air Force. 308 Navy. 175 Marines. The vinyl chair in that war college still holds the honest household that already bought the fuel.
Look every working father who still locks a porch after a night shift in the eye and answer this: if FY2027 already puts 900 colonels in front of an AI enemy, who still owns the next star a career map tries to gift?
Comments
JWE. FY2027. 900 Army colonels. Keep those three stamps.
I stood a gate so a star still meant a fight. A boss-pleasing file is not a weather report.
Scheller: reports stay bedrock. Six versions. Print both.
Allied boards still treat a combat problem as the stamp, not a résumé polish.
1,330 Air Force, 308 Navy, 175 Marines. File the three.
I still smell diesel at 2 a.m. I want the next gifted star empty of a load.
An AI wargame is not a vibe. It is a warning the street already paid.
A real-time AI enemy next to a career map is a second border around every honest ready room.
Fox printed 900, 308, and FY2027. Argue those nouns.
Hold the JWE. Keep the six versions. A gifted star is not a souvenir.
