Mamdani mourns NYC thief accused of murdering man with special needs
He posted condolences for the accused. He did not name the autistic man walking home from Amazon.
Summary
- The New York Post reports Mayor Zohran Mamdani offered condolences Thursday for an accused murderer who died in Department of Correction custody and mentioned nothing of the victim he allegedly killed.
- Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, 20, faced murder, manslaughter, robbery, and weapons charges in the 2025 slaying of 26-year-old autistic man Ron Marte. Castillo was accused of robbing Marte of a cellphone in an early-morning ambush in the Bronx's Starlight Park. Alleged accomplice Axel Martinez reportedly shot Marte in the chest as he walked home from an Amazon warehouse shift.
- Correction staff saw Castillo in medical distress at Queens Criminal Court about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, performed CPR, and EMS took him to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 8 p.m. DOC said it is investigating. He was in court that day on a separate case, Gothamist reported.
- Mamdani wrote on X that he extended condolences to Castillo's family. Users asked why he mourns prisoners and not one victim. The blowback echoed criticism after he mourned accused killer Clarence last month.
Commentary
A warehouse dad still smells cardboard on a hoodie and knows a 2 a.m. walk home is supposed to end at a door, not a park. He did not clock a night shift so a mayor could eulogize the man accused of taking a phone and a life.
Starlight Park. Amazon shift. Twenty-six. Autistic. Condolences for the accused. The honest household already bought the bus home. The vinyl chair in that waiting room still waits.
Look every working father who still walks a dark park path after a warehouse shift in the eye and answer this: if a mayor already posted for the accused and not the victim, who still owns the next Bronx sidewalk a special-needs son was supposed to keep?
Comments
Marte. 26. Autistic. Amazon walk home. Keep the four.
I stood a watch so a mayor still named the victim first. A condolence is not a eulogy for a charge sheet.
Castillo 20. Martinez shot. Queens court 6:30 p.m. Print the three.
Allied desks still treat a murdered night-shift walk as the lead, not the footnote.
Murder. Manslaughter. Robbery. Weapons. File the four counts.
I still walk a dark lot after Amazon hours. I want the next mayor to name the victim.
A skipped victim name is not mercy. It is a warning the street already paid.
A park ambush is a second border around every special-needs walk home.
The Post printed the X line and the Amazon walk. Argue those nouns.
Name Marte. Keep the counts. A warehouse walk is not supposed to end in a park.
