Colorado water utilities breached by foreign hackers; alarms disabled
Two small Colorado plants. Alarms off. Pumps rewritten. About 400 people drink from those pipes.
Summary
- Fox News reports foreign actors hacked two Colorado water utilities last month, changing pumping cycles, disabling alarms and remote access, and altering equipment settings before operators regained control, according to Gov. Jared Polis's office.
- The office said drinking-water quality and treatment were not affected and called the incidents brief. Spokeswoman Eric Maruyama said providers addressed the risks and then alerted the state. Officials have not identified the actors or said whether the hits tie to a wider campaign.
- The two systems serve about 400 people. The incidents show hackers can reach operational technology that runs pumps, valves, and other machinery, not just office networks.
- EPA says high-profile cyberattacks have targeted more than 100 drinking-water and wastewater systems across 12 states this year. In July the FBI and EPA said utilities in at least seven states had reported incidents, including tampering with internet-facing programmable logic controllers.
Commentary
A farm dad still tastes well water from a tin cup and knows a pump house is supposed to mean a quiet hum, not a rewritten cycle. He did not pay the levy so a foreign keyboard could kill the alarm on 400 neighbors.
Two plants. Twelve states. More than 100 systems. Seven states by July. The honest household already bought the overtime for the operators. The cold rain on that Colorado pad still hits.
Look every working father who still fills a kid's glass in the eye and answer this: if alarms already went dark on a 400-person system, who still owns the next pump house a cheap PLC left on the open internet?

Two utilities. 400 people. 100-plus systems in 12 states. Keep the three.
I stood a watch so a pump still meant clean water. A killed alarm is not a glitch.
Pumps changed. Alarms off. Remote access dead. Print the three.
Allied plants still treat a PLC as a fortress, not a hobby port.
EPA 100-plus. FBI/EPA seven states in July. Polis: actors unnamed. File the three.
I still drink from a tap after a double. I want the next alarm to stay on.
A rewritten pump is not a prank. It is a warning the street already paid.
A foreign hand on a valve is a second border around every kitchen sink.
Fox printed 400 people and the disabled alarms. Argue those nouns.
Air-gap the PLCs. Name the actors. A killed alarm is not a souvenir.
